The Best Time to Visit Uganda | Month | Weather & Season.

It is paramount to keep in mind that Uganda can be visited throughout the year. This is because the major activity in Uganda is gorilla trekking and gorillas can be tracked throughout the year because their movements are not affected by changing seasons.

The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. These drier periods see ideal trekking conditions for tracking mountain gorillas and chimpanzees with little to no mud, especially on steep paths. The weather is fairly temperate and favors travel all year round due to its compact size, proximity to the equator, and high altitude.

Uganda has two dry and wet seasons because they lie along the equator zone. The dry seasons fall in the months between December to February and again between June to September. Trekking Gorillas during the dry season is more advantageous and this is the best time to take clear photos of the countryside since there are always little or no obstructions like mist or overgrown vegetation.

The dry seasons also have their disadvantages. It is more expensive to travel around this period. Gorilla permits and accommodation availability are very hard to find and booking last-minute gorilla tours is very complicated. The dry season is not the best time to visit for those hoping for an easier trek or being assigned a nearby gorilla group. If you are targeting a particular gorilla group, we highly advise that you book your trip months in advance, otherwise you will find out that those gorilla families were already allocated to other travelers.

Best Time To Visit Uganda continued…

The months of March to April and October to November are considered wet seasons and also referred to as low seasons. The forests can get very muddy and tracking mountain gorillas becomes more challenging. We cannot disregard mud even during the dry season because mountain gorillas stay in rain forests and it can rain at any time of the year. It is crucial to note that the rains in Uganda do not go on throughout the day like it is in Europe or North America. It rains for between one to two hours before the sun appears again thus enabling the activity to go on regardless of whether it is raining or not.

The best time to go gorilla tracking is in the dry season where the vegetation is not thick and the ground trails aren’t very slippery. Getting this time right is kind of complicated because global warming has affected weather patterns a lot in Africa making it very hard to predict the beginning and end of the wet and dry seasons. At the end of the day, the final decision of when to visit the gorillas remains with the traveler.
