Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Location

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is located in southwestern Uganda, on the edge of the Rift Valley. The forest covers an area of approximately 331 square kilometers and is part of the larger Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It lies along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), adjacent to the Virunga National Park, and just a short distance from Rwanda.

History:

Establishment: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to its ecological importance.
Conservation: The forest has been a critical refuge for numerous species over millions of years. It remained a vital sanctuary during periods of climatic changes, and as a result, it is one of the most biologically diverse areas in Africa.
Gorilla Conservation: In the early 1990s, gorilla conservation efforts became prominent, helping to save the endangered mountain gorillas that call this forest home. Today, Bwindi is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

The forest is located between Kabale and Kisoro districts in Uganda, with four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Visitors can access Bwindi from major cities such as Kampala or Entebbe via road or domestic flights to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips, followed by a short drive.

Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons from June to August and December to February are ideal for trekking due to lower rainfall. However, gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year.
