Detailed Itinerary: 1-Day Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

04:45–06:00 — Lodge pickup & permit delivery

Early pickup from your lodge (time depends on lodge location). JimJam Safaris supplies your Kibale National Park chimpanzee permit at pickup and handles entry paperwork so you can focus on the day. You’ll meet your guide, who will give a short briefing about safety, health rules, and trek expectations before heading to the Kanyanchu Visitors’ Centre.

06:00–07:00 — Arrival at Kanyanchu & final briefing

Arrive at the Kanyanchu trailhead (register, use restroom, and collect any last-minute gear or porter assistance). Rangers review the chimp viewing rules (distance, no flash photography, no eating during viewing) and split guests into small trekking groups. This is a good time for final bathroom breaks and to leave unnecessary gear at the centre.

07:00–10:30 — Chimpanzee trek

Set off into the rainforest. Trek duration varies; sometimes the chimps are nearby, and the walk is short; other days, the team may hike longer, depending on chimp movements. When a habituated group is located, rangers guide you to a safe viewing position, and you’ll enjoy the permitted observation period; trackers use radio updates to speed the search. Expect muddy, uneven trails and occasional steep sections.

10:30–11:30 — Viewing debrief & light picnic / return to lodge

After the viewing, the guide will debrief the group about the chimp behaviour you observed and answer questions. You’ll either enjoy a light picnic in a scenic spot or drive back to your lodge for a full lunch, depending on your booking preference. Photographers can review shots and clean lenses while the group relaxes.

12:30–15:30 — Optional Bigodi Wetland visit or cultural stop

If time permits and you’d like more wildlife or culture, take a guided Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk, excellent birding and chances to see other primates, run by the local community. Alternatively, choose a village walk or tea-estate stop en route back to your lodge. Otherwise, relax at the lodge and enjoy lunch.

Afternoon — Return & drop-off

You’ll be dropped back at your lodge (or onward transfer to Fort Portal/Kampala on request). JimJam Safaris will handle any permit paperwork and closing formalities.
