Gishora Drum Sanctuary Of Burundi, History And Best Day Tours

Gishora Drum Sanctuary is amongst the most predominant drum sites in Burundi and is located along the hilltop at 7km from the city center of Gitega. The sanctuary is also at 200m along the Gitega-Ngozi route. King Mwezi Gisabo founded this drum sanctuary after accomplishing victory over his rebellious contender Chief Ntibirangwa. Today the site is run by a local community with descendants of the ancient lineage of ‘Abanyigisaka’ who were ritualists that had privileges from the royal court. Previously, the drums in Burundi were an indication of the political power of the monarchy and were beaten on special functions done out by the families of the ‘Abatimbo’ and some of these comprised royal inaugurations, the sowing festivities, funerals of kings among others.

The site also has two ritual drums that were never drummed and these include; the Ruciteme (the one for whom we clear the forest) and Murimirwa (the one for whom we cultivate). These were given names to mean the farming vacation in addition to the fertility and characteristics of the King. The sanctuary also has normal drums and these include the ‘Ingendanyi’ (retinue) which the Batimbo used to drum on exceptional events in Burundi.
