How to Plan a Trip to Zanzibar from the USA, Canada, and Europe

Planning a trip to Zanzibar from the USA, Canada, or Europe? Flights, visas, mandatory insurance, the best time, where to stay, and sample trips from JimJam Safaris. Zanzibar is easy to dream about and surprisingly fiddly to organize. The beaches, Stone Town, and the warm Indian Ocean are the easy part. The harder part is the paperwork, including a visa, a government insurance policy, and flight routings that vary widely depending on where you start.

This trip to Zanzibar guide covers what to book, in what order, and where travelers from North America and Europe tend to go wrong. We have also included sample trips, because Zanzibar works best when it is paired with something else.

How to plan a trip to Zanzibar

  1. Pick your season (see the table below) and aim for 7–10 nights on the island, longer if you are adding a safari.
  2. Book flights early. Most travelers need at least one connection, and direct options are limited and seasonal.
  3. Apply for your Tanzania visa. One visa covers Zanzibar and the mainland.
  4. Buy the mandatory inbound travel insurance from the correct government insurer for your first point of entry.
  5. Choose the coast that suits you. Zanzibar’s beaches differ a lot, mostly because of tides.
  6. Add a second leg if you have the time, such as a Serengeti safari or a Uganda or Rwanda gorilla trek on the way.

Traveller Typical Visa Notes
USA Multiple-entry visa, US$100, valid for up to 12 months, subject to immigration conditions. US citizens generally require a multiple-entry visa rather than the standard single-entry tourist visa. Each stay is typically limited to 90 days.
Canada Typically US$50 for a standard single-entry tourist visa, where applicable. Eligible travellers may apply online or obtain a visa on arrival, subject to current Tanzanian immigration rules.
Most European countries Typically US$50 for a standard tourist visa, where required. Visa requirements depend on nationality. Check the official Tanzanian immigration guidelines before travelling.

Important: Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania, so travellers do not need a separate Zanzibar visa. A Tanzanian visa, where required, covers travel to both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Visa fees, eligibility and entry conditions may change, so confirm the latest requirements with the Tanzania Immigration Department before departure.

You can apply on the official Tanzania Immigration eVisa portal (visa.immigration.go.tz). Visa on arrival is still offered at Zanzibar’s airport, but the government recommends applying in advance. The portal has had availability problems this year, so apply early, and print your application and payment confirmation in case approval hasn’t arrived by departure.

You will generally need a passport valid for at least six months, a blank page, a return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation. Children need their own visa applications.

Yellow fever: a certificate is required if you arrive directly from or spend more than 12 hours in an airport of, a country with yellow fever transmission risk. Most North American and European travelers won’t be affected, but a connection through a risk country can trigger it. Check your full route.

Mandatory travel insurance (the requirement people miss)

This is where many travelers are caught out. Tanzania requires government-issued inbound insurance, separate from your own policy.

  • Zanzibar: the policy costs US$44 per adult, with US$22 for children aged 3–17, and covers 92 days. It must come from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, and policies from other providers aren’t accepted, even if they have international validity.
  • Mainland Tanzania (new): since 1 October 2026, foreign visitors entering the mainland also need an inbound policy at US$44 with a cover of up to 92 days.
  • Which policy do you buy? It depends on your first point of entry: NIC if you land on the mainland, ZIC if you land in Zanzibar, and one policy then covers both.

Buy it online before you fly, and keep the certificate or QR code on your phone and in print. Travellers without the policy can be refused entry.

This policy is emergency cover only. It doesn’t replace the comprehensive travel insurance you should carry for trip cancellation, baggage, and medical costs, so keep your own policy too.

A Trip to Zanzibar from the USA and Canada

There are no non-stop flights from the US or Canada to Zanzibar, so plan on one stop, sometimes two. From the US, the usual connections are via Amsterdam, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, or Addis Ababa. Canadian travellers use the same hubs, typically departing from Toronto, Montréal, or Vancouver.

The best hub depends on your departure city and fare. A few practical points:

  • Istanbul and Addis Ababa suit many travelers because Turkish Airlines flies Istanbul to Zanzibar directly, and Ethiopian Airlines serves the island from Addis Ababa.
  • Gulf routings need checking. Qatar Airways suspended its Zanzibar service after a 2026 Middle East conflict restricted Gulf airspace. Check the current schedule before you build a trip around a Gulf connection.
  • Nairobi and Kilimanjaro are useful alternatives. Kenya Airways flies Nairobi to Zanzibar on weekdays, and around 19 non-stop flights a week link Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro. That makes a safari-then-beach trip straightforward.

Allow a full travel day each way, and consider an overnight stop rather than a tight connection on a trip you have spent months planning.

A Trip to Zanzibar from Europe

Europe has the best direct options, though many are seasonal:

  • Frankfurt: Condor flies non-stop three times a week, in about 9 hours 10 minutes.
  • Zurich: Edelweiss flies seasonally, from June 2027 to March 2028.
  • Italy: Neos flies from Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino, with Verona added in high season.
  • Istanbul: Turkish Airlines is a useful connection for travelers from other European cities.
  • London: British Airways is listed as starting seasonal Gatwick flights on 27 May 2027, which will matter for UK travellers planning.

Charter and seasonal schedules change from year to year, so confirm them before you commit to dates.

Visa requirements for Zanzibar

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so there is no separate Zanzibar visa. One Tanzania visa covers both the mainland and the island.

The best time for a trip to Zanzibar

Months What to Expect Good For
June–October Generally the driest and coolest period, with sunny days and comfortable temperatures. Beach holidays, snorkelling, diving, and combining Zanzibar with the Serengeti Great Migration season.
December–February Hot, humid, and generally sunny, with occasional brief showers. Winter-sun escapes, beach relaxation, swimming, and diving.
March–May The long rainy season, with frequent rainfall and potentially humid conditions. Some accommodation properties may close temporarily. Budget-conscious travellers seeking lower rates who are comfortable with wet weather and flexible plans.
November The short rainy season, usually featuring brief showers interspersed with sunny periods. Quieter shoulder-season stays, fewer crowds, and travellers looking for potential accommodation savings.

Travel Tip: June to October is generally one of the best periods to visit Zanzibar for beach holidays and outdoor activities. However, conditions vary from year to year, so consider your preferred activities, budget, and tolerance for rain when planning your trip.

Zanzibar Safety and Travel Advisories

Zanzibar is widely visited and generally calm, but advisories apply to the whole country, so read them before you book. Register with your embassy’s travel program, and take normal precautions with valuables in Stone Town and on quiet beaches.

Where to stay: choosing the right coast

  • Nungwi and Kendwa (north): swimmable at most tides, lively sunsets, plenty of resorts and restaurants.
  • Matemwe and Pongwe (north-east): quieter and more private, a good fit for honeymoons.
  • Paje, Jambiani, and Michamvi (south-east): wide beaches, big tidal shifts, and a kitesurfing scene. Swimming depends on the tide.
  • Kizimkazi (south): dolphin excursions and a slower pace.
  • Stone Town: a UNESCO-listed old city of spice markets and Swahili architecture. Spend a night or two here rather than the whole trip.

For an affordable luxury approach, we usually suggest splitting stays: two nights in Stone Town, then the rest of the trip on one beach where you can settle in. Moving every two days eats up the holiday.

What to do beyond the beach

  • Stone Town walking tours, markets, and the old Fort area
  • A spice farm visit
  • Snorkelling and dive trips, including at Mnemba Atoll
  • Dolphin and sunset dhow excursions
  • Jozani Forest, home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey
  • Prison Island day trips
  • Cooking classes and Swahili seafood

8 nights: beach and Stone Town

Two nights in Stone Town, then six nights on the coast of your choice, with a spice tour, a snorkeling day, and a sunset dhow cruise. This suits couples and first-timers.

10–12 nights: Serengeti safari and Zanzibar

Fly into Kilimanjaro, spend four to five nights on safari in northern Tanzania, then fly to Zanzibar for the beach. This is the most popular combination from North America and Europe. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and the timing of the Great Migration varies from year to year.

12–14 nights: gorillas, then the beach

Uganda or Rwanda gorilla trekking, followed by a flight to Zanzibar via Nairobi or Kigali’s regional connections. The beach is a good way to recover after trekking. Gorilla permits are limited, so this is the part to secure first.

What does a trip to Zanzibar cost?

Costs vary a lot with season, accommodation category, group size, flights, and the activities you choose. Beyond the fixed costs listed above (the visa and the mandatory insurance), any figure we give is an estimate until we price your actual dates. Fares we saw quoted included economy fares from Frankfurt starting at EUR 210 in the cheapest window and one-way fares from the US from about US$641 outside peak season. Treat those as examples of what’s possible, not what you’ll find on your dates.
