The 5 days of Rwanda gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hike starts and ends in Kigali. This trip will also offer you an opportunity to explore Kigali city with a city tour which will include visiting the genocide memorial and the Belgium museum The trip will take you to Volcanoes National Park and while there, you will have fun meeting the mountain gorillas that share 99% DNA with the humans. You will have a great time meeting the gentle giants during the gorilla trek. While on this tour, you will go to Golden Monkey trekking. The trip will be to Lake Kivu where you will take a relaxed boat ride, allowing you to explore one of the beautiful freshwater bodies in Rwanda. You will also have an opportunity to trek the mountain gorillas in their natural habitats and hike Nyiragongo, an active volcano that last erupted in 2021 and claimed human lives in Goma and the neighboring areas.

Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Nyiragongo Hike in Congo

Day 1: Arrival, Kigali city tour and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Welcome to the land of a thousand hills! Upon arrival, you will be met and greeted by your English-speaking driver guide who will briefly take you through the trip plan. He will take you for the city tour and during this tour, you will visit some historical sites within Kigali city. You will visit the Gisozi genocide memorial museum where you will learn more about what transpired during the April 1994 genocide and how it went throughout the country. If time allows, you will visit the firehouse which is the area where the plane that was carrying President Habyarima was brought down, which later sparked the famous 1994 Rwanda genocide. You will then visit the Belgium Museum and learn more about Rwanda’s culture.  After the city tour, you will have lunch and then transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking & canoeing on the twin lakes

On this day, you will have a great time meeting with the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park! After a tasty breakfast, your guide will pick you up from the lodge. You will head to the park headquarters for briefing by ranger guides at 7:30. With a packed lunch, you will start the trek to search for the gorillas and after finding them you will spend with them a maximum of 1 hour. This walk can take 4-5 hours depending on where you meet the gorillas. The park is steep, it is a real hike, and being physically fit is recommended. After lunch, you will be taken to visit these two beautiful lakes, explore their beauty, and discover the wonderful adventures on this Canoe ride trip. You will be thrilled by the unique scenery of these impressive blue lakes from their dramatic formation that occurred as a result of Volcanic eruptions, the stunning views of numerous verdant islands within the lake, beautiful highlands, and plantations in the surroundings, and volcanic mountains that stand high from the backdrop.  On your Canoe ride in Twin Lakes, there is also a chance to spot a variety of abundant bird species and learn about the real African rural life as you gently ride past the rural villages.

Day 3: Golden monkey trekking and to Lake Kivu

This will take us through the edges of the forest via potato fields and the briefing will be conducted in the same place where the usual Kinigi park office is located this means the trekking will take us 3-4 hours after the trekking, we shall return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will be transferred to Lake Kivu with beautiful views of the lake shores. Upon arrival, you will take a relaxed boat ride, allowing you to explore one of the beautiful freshwater bodies in Rwanda. After the boat ride, you will return to the lodge for relaxation, an overnight stay, and dinner.

Day 4: Nyiragongo Volcano Hike

You will have your morning breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters-Kibati Ranger Post at 8:15 am. You will be briefed and a have chance to hire porters in preparation for starting up the Nyiragongo volcano hike. This will take about 6 hours depending on your speed and fitness, where some people may hike in fewer hours and others take more time. The trail is through lava rocks, forested areas, and open space for you to enjoy the views. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the stunning views of the boiling lava emitting a red glow from the crusted lava and can have pictorial moments.

Day 5: Descending from Nyiragongo Volcano and Transfer to Kigali


After an early breakfast, you will descend to the park headquarters and this normally takes approximately four hours depending on your level of fitness. On reaching the bottom you will transfer back to the border for your transfer back to Kigali for the flight back home.
