What “Erebero” Means and Why the Setting Matters
The name comes from the Rukiga phrase for “a place where you can see far.” The lodge sits in an amphitheater of steep forested hills, with views across the valley and the Bwindi canopy. You can hear the river that marks the park boundary running in the valley below.
Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and roughly half of the world’s mountain gorillas live there. Most lodges cluster around Buhoma. Erebero Hills sits away from that cluster while staying within reach of the main trekking areas, so you get quiet in the evenings without a long journey to your trek.
The Erebero Hills Suites
There are eight suites, and the design is built around the forest rather than competing with it.
- Glass-fronted interiors open onto private decks with wide views and, per Asilia, 180-degree vistas.
- Bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers and free-standing bathtubs that look out over the trees.
- Boot-room entrances give you somewhere practical to leave muddy gear after a trek.
- Terraced construction uses suspended decks and deep overhangs to give the feeling of sitting among the trees.
The Erebero Hills Lodge was designed by the Balinese studio Pablo Luna Studios. Its colors and textures come from tea leaves, mountain contours, and the forest canopy. Materials are largely local and low-impact, including bamboo, stone, earth, and woven textiles. The bamboo is harvested locally, which supports regional growers.
Main Pavilion and Dining
The main pavilion has a library, bar, terrace, and swimming pool, all oriented toward the valley views. A sunken fire lounge is meant for misty mornings and cool evenings. Meals are described as hearty and contemporary with Ugandan influences, and in-room massages are offered for tired legs after a trek. We confirm current menus, dietary arrangements, and spa options when you book.
Gorilla Trekking from Erebero Hills
Gorilla trekking is the main reason to stay here. Treks begin early in the morning with a ranger briefing. Rangers and trackers locate the group, and once you reach the gorillas, you may spend up to one hour with them. Trek length varies from short walks to most of a day, so a lodge with a long bath and a good dinner makes a real difference.
Erebero Hills offers access to the Ruhija and Buhoma sectors, with Ruhija the closest. Which family you track depends on permit availability for your date, and the permit is booked separately through the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Some points to know before you plan:
- Permits are limited and should be booked as early as possible. The sources we reviewed give different current permit rates, so we confirm the exact price with UWA before quoting.
- Age limit: The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15.
- Wildlife is wild. Gorilla sightings cannot be guaranteed, and we explain this before you book.
- Fitness: Bwindi’s terrain is steep, muddy, and at altitude. Porters are available and worth hiring.
Beyond the Gorillas
Between treks, the lodge offers other ways to spend your time:
- Batwa community visits that explain the Batwa’s deep connection to these forests.
- Guided walks to waterfalls and through the forest edge.
- Garden tours and tea tasting among the organic tea gardens around the lodge, which also provide income to local farming families.
- Birding. Bwindi’s bird list tops 350 species, and chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and forest elephants live in the park, though sightings are never guaranteed.
- Time at the lodge, including the pool, library, and fire lounge.
A Lodge Built Around Reforestation
The lodge stands on former tea farmland that is being returned to forest. Bwindi’s boundary is abrupt, with almost no transition between forest and farmland, and that creates conflict between people and wildlife and limits animal movement. Asilia’s stated long-term aim is a reforested buffer along the northern boundary, created together with the Batwa and Bakiga communities.
As of Asilia’s November 2025 announcement, 25,000 indigenous trees had been planted, with a further 35,000 seedlings purchased from local nurseries. We recommend asking for the latest figures when you book, since they will have changed.
How to get to Erebero Hills
Erebero Hills is close to the Kihihi airstrip, which allows a flight-in option from Entebbe. Overland transfers are also possible, and travel times vary by route and road conditions, so we confirm exact timings when we plan your trip. The lodge works well as the Bwindi stay in a longer Uganda or East Africa journey.
When to Go
The dry months, roughly June to September, are the most popular time for trekking, and paths are generally easier. Trekking runs year-round, and trails are muddier in the wetter months. Rain is possible at any time in the rainforest, so pack for it.
How Erebero Hills Fits into a Longer Safari
We can tailor this lodge into itineraries such as
- A Bwindi-focused trip: a short stay for gorilla trekking and a Batwa visit.
- Uganda gorillas and wildlife: Bwindi combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale for chimpanzees, or Murchison Falls.
- Uganda and Rwanda: Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda, plus Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
- Honeymoon safaris: gorilla trekking followed by a beach stay in Zanzibar or elsewhere.
If you want to combine Bwindi with Mgahinga, we plan the transfer and extra nights so you aren’t rushing between the two parks.
Who Does Erebero Hills Suit
- Couples and honeymooners who want privacy, views, and comfort.
- Photographers who want quiet mornings in the landscape.
- Families with children aged five and over (the trekking minimum is 15, so younger children stay at the lodge during treks).
- Conservation-minded travelers who want a stay linked to reforestation and community work.
If you want a lower-cost Bwindi stay, we can suggest lodges at other price points. This is a top-end property, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s the right choice for your budget.
Why Plan Your Stay with JimJam Safaris
We plan private, tailor-made African safaris with comfortable lodges, professional guides, and realistic timing. For a Bwindi stay, we handle permit timing, transfers, and the sequence of parks, so the trip fits together without wasted days. We’ll also explain plainly what is confirmed, what depends on availability, and what can change.
