Lake Mburo National Park Location, Facts, Wildlife, Photos & Lodges
Lake Mburo National Park is situated in western Uganda and it is a compact gem. Lake Mburo National Park is about 200 kilometers from Kampala. Lake Mburo is convenient for visitors who would like to experience wildlife at the shortest distance possible. It allows for close viewing and exceptional photographs. The park is underlain by Precambrian metamorphic rocks which date more than 5 million years ago.
Facts
At 260 square kilometers, it is Uganda’s smallest national park but one of the most interesting parks. The sight of galloping impalas in full flight can take your breath away. You can cruise the lake for spot fishing or simply admire the shoreline which at certain hours teems with wildlife.
The park attracts a great number of visitors throughout the year. The most engaging tourism activities done within the park include; birding the swampy valleys of Warukiri and Miriti, the roadside between Rwonyo camp and the jetty, the viewing platforms at the salt lick, and the Rubanga forest. The other activities include; launch trips on Lake Mburo, hikes and nature walks, horseback riding, spot fishing, and game drives through the acacia woodlands, the grassy hillsides, and seasonally flooded valley floors.
Lake Mburo National Park Wildlife
The park is home to myriad wildlife including 77 Giraffes, African Buffalo, waterbucks, elands, warthogs, zebras, topis, leopards, hippos, oribis, impalas, reedbucks, jackals, and over 310 bird species. Lake Mburo National Park is the best place to encounter acacia-dwelling birds in Uganda, forest species are present in Rubanga forest, and six papyrus endemics including; the blue-headed coucal and papyrus gonolek are resident in various swamps. Southern species including; the southern ground hornbill and black-collared barbet are also found in the park. The red-necked spur fowl, African wattled pover, flappet larks, rufous-chested swallow, rupells’ long-tailed starling, sacred ibis, and southern red bishop among others can also be spotted at the park. Several migratory birds are spotted in November –April.
